Gap Year

Group Instructor (Trainee Instructor)

This role has been designed as: either a position for someone wanting to make good use of a gap year between studies or jobs; or a starting position within the Centre from which suitable employees can progress to a full-time instructional role.

Trainees work as Group Instructors (GI’s) 5 day week on a 6 week rotation: 2 weeks on domestic work, and 4 weeks on the instructional team.

There are no minimum qualifications required but we do require experience in a broad range of activities and a willingness to work hard alongside qualified instructors in order to progress.

'Glencoe  Outdoor Centre makes a difference in the world because now a days we live in a very virtual world and we can offer children real experiences in the outdoors. Glencoe Outdoor Centre has also given me the opportunity to work with an international team and helped me to improve my English and grow my knowledge of outdoor activities'.

I would just like to thank you very much for having me to do work experience with you. I have really enjoyed my time at the outdoor centre and feel as though I have learnt a lot from the whole experience. I was made to feel really welcome and felt very much part of the team. I loved working with the young people and seeing them achieve more than they believed they could. It was great to work alongside such experienced instructors and I really appreciate all of the advice that was given to me.

'Thank you for allowing me to join you at the Centre for a week of work experience. I very much enjoyed the experience which gave me an excellent insight into possible career options. Please pass on my thanks to all the instructors, whose friendliness and enthusiasm helped make the week all the more enjoyable.

'I want to send a big thank you to all the staff who helped make Michael's work experience such as success last week... he came back really inspired and full of praise for how well he was looked after and how much he learned during the week.  It's really given his confidence a boost and he certainly enjoyed himself!'
